PIA Announces Six Industry Experts to Serve on Industry Panel Discussion

Columbus, Ohio – Professional Insurance Agents Association of Ohio, Inc. (PIA) is pleased to announce six industry experts who will participate in an industry panel discussion to be held during PIA’s 2010 Agency Management and Profitability Conference (AMPC) Sept. 23, 2010. The panel includes independent agents, insurance company executives and industry leaders who will
discuss current topics affecting the industry and its future.

“The poor economy has negatively impacted small business owners, including the independent insurance agent, and many agents have been affected by ongoing state and federal issues,” said PIA President John Burtch, of American Agency, Inc. in Columbus. “We are pleased to offer our members the opportunity to hear from industry experts and leaders who will discuss current topics affecting the insurance industry and its future, including state and federal issues facing the insurance industry.”

The panel includes two state officials: Doug Anderson, chief policy officer at the Ohio Department of Insurance (ODI), who oversees policy, legislation and government affairs for ODI, and Jim Raussen, director of insurance and financial services for the Ohio Department of Development, who serves as the chief state official specializing in the retention and growth of the financial services industry in Ohio.

Two company executives will be represented on the panel: Randy O’Conner, CPCU, AIM, vice president, underwriting and sales for Ohio Mutual Insurance Group in Bucyrus, who has been with Ohio Mutual since 1999, and has served in his current role since July 2005; and Robert P. Restrepo, Jr., chairman, president and CEO of State Auto Insurance Companies in Columbus,
who brings to the panel a broad background in the national and regional property casualty insurance industry, and a strong commitment to the independent agency system.

Two independent insurance agents and PIA members will also serve on the panel. Terry Kelso, CPCU, CPIA, of Associated Insurance Agencies, Inc. in Westerville, is a former PIA president and board member. As current chairman of PIA’s Company Relations Committee, he understands the important relationship between agencies and companies and is familiar with industry issues from both an agency and company perspective. John Koetz, CIC, CPCU, of W.E. Davis Insurance Agency, Inc. in Columbus, is also a former PIA president and board member, and currently an active member of PIA. He has testified before the state legislature on numerous pieces of legislation on behalf of PIA, and recently testified before the Ohio House Insurance Committee on House Bill 300, the agent licensing bill.

PIA’s 2010 AMPC also features a new location in downtown Columbus, a new format and a new agenda designed to offer attendees more opportunities for professional development, continuing education and networking.

Professional Insurance Agents Association of Ohio, Inc. was founded in 1933 and remains the state’s largest organization representing independent insurance agents. PIA’s membership includes approximately 1,300 independent insurance agencies, their employees and their customers. Independent agents provide auto, home and business insurance from many different companies to match consumers with the best choices for their particular needs.
